Guiding principles?
Have fun
Why else would you do it?
Light spark
Find a way to get hooked on the pursuit. If you don't feel like doing it, don't do it - but please do something else :)
Learn fishing
Own your self-development. Find what to work on and ways to teach and improve yourself.
Get help to get started, when you get stuck, and when it's time to check in.
But don't outsource the actual development, i.e. this is an active life quest and not passive consumption.
Keep looking
... for something to work on. When you're not focused on other life priorities, then in the day-to-day think, search, test what's not working as well, and find ways to go after it.
Seek "uncomfortabilty"
If something comes easily, you've probably already developed it to the point of diminishing returns - so why not complement that with something new? Go for what feels slightly uncomfortable, and you've probably found a steeper learning curve...
Find paths
Build upon what you have, start small and easy (incl really small and really easy) from there, and work your way up. Most if not all learning happens this way, which means finding a path and steps that work seems key!
